Pret A Manger, the fast food takeaway chain appointed Afroditi to redesign the packaging across its dessert range. The packaging designs needed to reflect Pret’s commitment to rolling out more environmentally-friendly design work, manipulating alternative materials to evolve the overall look of its range. Afroditi started by exploring the emotive qualities of packaging, as well as their capability of subconscious communication.
When she came back with a proposal for the first square cheesecake packaging in the market, the manufacturers were totally perplexed. Handmade cheesecakes were traditionally cooked in rectangular trays and cut in squares pieces. The design is more efficient, stacks better and subtly communicates Pret’s brand value: fresh from the kitchen.
On-pack graphics and structural designs were both part of the redesign, in collaboration with Pret’s in-house design team.
