The Spare Match- a Campaign for the homeless was designed as response to an unusual brief set renowned architect Ron Arad. The brief challenged young designers to prove that design can help the people who own nothing: the homeless. Afroditi approached homelessness in the UK as a political issue rather than a financial one.

Inspired by the Little Match Girl fairy tale, she designed a set of individual matchboxes prestamped and pre-addressed to the Prime Minister’s office. Each contained a personal message from a homeless person to Tony Blair and the idea is that once all the matches have been used, you post your empty box to Downing Street.

The campaign won the prestigious Edward Marshall Trust Award of 2003. The Trust funded the manufacture of 10,000 matchboxes together with flyers and stamps. They financially supported the Big Issue Foundation at the Glastonbury Festival selling the matches to raise money for the Big Issue Foundation and highlight the issue of homelessness with the crowds at Glastonbury and the Blair government.

Afroditi did eventually receive a letter from Tony Blair, as well as the Queen and the Mayor of London.
